The Power of Belonging
As summer comes to an end and a new school year begins, families across Northeast Kansas are settling into new routines. Backpacks are being packed, school supplies are finding their way into classrooms, and children are preparing to meet new teachers, reconnect with friends, and take on another year of learning and growth.
But a successful school year is about more than academics. Children also need to know that they are safe, supported, and valued. They need trusted adults who listen, spaces where they can be themselves, and communities where they feel that they belong.
Belonging matters.
When children feel connected to the people and communities around them, they are better positioned to learn, build relationships, develop confidence, and navigate challenges. Creating that sense of belonging is something we can all contribute to—not just teachers and parents, but neighbors, mentors, community organizations, and caring adults.
At YWCA Northeast Kansas, we see the power of belonging every day through our youth programs. One example is Kids Quest, our before- and after-school program serving students at several Topeka Public Schools elementary locations.
Kids Quest provides more than a safe place for children to go before and after the school day. It creates an environment where children can learn, explore, build relationships, and be themselves. Students have time for homework assistance, enrichment activities, STEM-focused programming, and healthy after-school snacks. Most importantly, they have caring adults who recognize and honor each child's dignity and individuality.
For working parents and caregivers, reliable child care can make an enormous difference. For children, having a consistent and welcoming place to go can provide something just as important: a sense of stability and connection.
That is what belonging can look like.
It can look like a child walking through the door after school and knowing someone is happy to see them.
It can look like having a place to ask for help with homework, try something new, or discover an interest in science and technology.
It can look like making a new friend, being encouraged by a caring adult, or simply having a space where you can relax and be yourself.
And it can look like a family knowing that they have a community standing alongside them.
As we begin another school year, I hope we will remember that every child deserves to feel that they belong. We can help create that feeling through small, everyday actions: welcoming someone new, listening with patience, encouraging a child who is struggling, or making sure families know where they can turn for support.
