<image:caption>What inspires you to support survivors and the organizations that serve them? No one should be judged for the life experiences they have had or continue to have due to circumstances that we may not know or understand. All people desire to be treated with kindness. What would you like to share about your work? The CSE has amazing staff who demonstrate care, kindness, thoughtfulness, and patience with those whom they serve and with their coworkers. I have been volunteering there for over 5 years and will continue to be a part of this team as long as they will have me. I am only a very, very small part of this program. What message do you have for people in our community about domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or trafficking? You are not alone and there is help, support, and HOPE.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How did you get involved with CSE? In developing the City of Topeka's domestic violence prosecution program, CSE provided us with training that was key to understanding the pathway to successful prosecution, as well as victim assistance. What inspires you to support survivors and the organizations that serve them? Domestic violence survivors are often the most vulnerable citizens in a community. They truly need assistance and support in their greatest time of need. I am passionate about stopping the cycle of violence. What message do you have for people in our community about domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, or trafficking? These crimes are often hidden by the victims and are more prevalent than most people realize. These are dangerous crimes that harm entire families, not only physically but also mentally. It takes many resources to address these crimes.</image:caption>

<image:caption>How did you get involved with CSE? For decades, I’ve been advocating for an end to violence against women and children. Working in this space has created endless opportunities over the years to partner with CSE, especially in anti-trafficking services and advocacy. I am a member of the Kansas Human Trafficking Advisory Board, Executive Director of the International Public Policy Institute, and a member of Rotary Club of Community Action Against Human Trafficking (CAAHT). I also founded the Topeka Shawnee County anti-Human Trafficking Coalition. Tell us about your connection to Concealed Revealed. Way back in 2004, I had a group of students in a special topics course at Washburn University. Several of them were already volunteering or interning at CSE, and they decided to plan a fundraiser as their semester assignment. We came up with the idea to hold an art auction! I believe in the power of art as a form of activism and education. I’m also an artist, and donate a piece (or two!) to the auction each year.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Guest Post: Connecting with Claire’s Community - Question: Tell us what Claire’s Community is about and how people can get involved with your organization. Nicole: Claire’s Community is a suite of healthy relationship education and intimate violence prevention. We provide free resources for everyone, whether they are young or older individuals on our website. We also provide education for people learning consent, red flags and green flags within a relationship, what is healthy and what is not, and where to go to seek help if they are experiencing or could be experiencing an unhealthy relationship. It isn’t always an intimate relationship, sometimes it’s learning healthy relationships with your parents, siblings, coworkers, coaches, or peers. All of that is included in healthy relationships.</image:title>
<image:caption>Claire’s Community offers a ton of great resources, like the Teen Power and Control Wheel, to help young adults learn about healthy and unhealthy relationships.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Concealed Revealed Legacy - Why Concealed Revealed?</image:title>
<image:caption>In 2004, several Washburn University, CSE interns and staff decided to plan an art auction for a class project. Their goal was to raise unrestricted, flexible funds to support the work that CSE Advocates were doing. In the first year, they raised about $1,000. It was all profit because they put on the event with a budget of $0! In 2024, the Concealed Revealed Art Auction raised over $55,000. Join us on April 5, 2025, to carry on the legacy! Pictured: A blast from the past with some of the inaugural planning committee members! From left to right are Laura Burton, Michelle McCormick, Nikki MacMillan, and Sara O’Keeffe. This core group continues to attend and support Concealed Revealed.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Concealed Revealed Legacy - Survivor Art Group</image:title>
<image:caption>While Concealed Revealed was growing roots in the community, interns and volunteers were building a healing art group within CSE. At first, they held arts & crafts activities at shelter. As survivors exited shelter, they expressed interest in remaining part of the art group. YWCA moved the art group to the main office, and survivors continued creating together as an integral part of their healing journeys! Visiting artists contributed their talents. Over the years, some of the group art was donated to the auction as a way for survivors to give back to CSE.</image:caption>

She got involved after being nominated for the Women of Excellence Awards in 2017. “I really like how Envista does support the YWCA, and I’m proud to be a part of Envista and I’m always proud to see Envista leadership volunteering for different YWCA events. <image:caption>“Envista really supports our team members through a lot of different ways. But one of the biggest, which has impacted me as well, is the professional growth opportunities. We looked at our leadership team and saw that 65 percent of them started at an entry-level position, which I thought was amazing. That just shows it’s been part of our culture forever to have that many people who start at entry level and are now running the organization." Since 2022, over 20 employees have graduated from our Career Pathing Program, which connects team members with professional development opportunities, mentorship, and training to achieve their career goals. Over half of those graduates have already been promoted within Envista.</image:caption>

Some of these women, their careers took them outside of the credit union and they have created this network of support for one another.” Thanks to Liz Steffen, Jennifer is also a current member of the YWCA Board of Directors, lending her skills to help our programs and services run more efficiently and reach more people. “The YWCA does such vital work in our community, and I have three daughters, so I want them to know that their voice is important.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Originally from Singapore, Linda has traveled and lived all over the world. She has a strong business background, having started and improved several businesses including a family business that grew from 10 to 250 employees under her guidance. She moved to Topeka in 2012 and joined the YWCA team in 2023, quickly being promoted to Director of Finance. In her role, Linda brings much-needed structure and financial expertise to our programs, which range in size, budget, and funding source. She is truly valued for her skills, and also for her friendship and dedication to the team. “It’s easy to be intimidated by a finance person, but Linda is the most welcoming person and I always feel comfortable asking questions or going to her for help with something.” - Rachel Grollmes, CSE Public Education Coordinator</image:caption>

<image:caption>Dear Governor Kelly, I live in [name of Kansas town], and I am writing to urge clemency for Sarah Gonzales-McLinn who is currently incarcerated at the Topeka Correctional Facility. Sarah has already served 10 years for her crime, and I am confident that she no longer poses a threat to the community. She is involved in services and activities that support her healing, and she has a community of supporters who will encourage her continued healing after she is released from prison. Thank you for your ongoing support of victims/survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking in Kansas, and for your time and consideration of this clemency request. Our rural office in Holton just added Nemaha County to its service area, which means that the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment now services five counties: Brown, Jackson, Nemaha, Shawnee, and Wabaunsee. The CSE shelter just doubled in size, with a new location adding between 30 and 40 bed spaces.</image:caption>

They discussed the gender pay gap, financial abuse, and how our society should value caregiving. “One of the biggest barriers is child care,” Perez-Luthi said. “But it also comes when we’re taking care of our parents, and the cost of that — a lot of times women are required to leave their jobs because they just can’t make enough to pay or sustain the child care costs or the caregiving cost of their parents or their loved ones.” Read more and listen here. <image:caption>For Week 3, Rachel spoke to LaTonya Boyd, a community activist and survivor, along with Courtland Davis, director of operations at the YWCA Northeast Kansas, and LaRonna Lassiter Saunders, a civil rights advocate and attorney. They discussed the toll that gun violence takes on our communities, and how the policy-level conversation leaves out the voices of Black and brown people. “I’ve felt the effect of gun violence since I think 14 or 15, when I went to the first of many funerals, young folks were lost due to gun violence,” Davis said. “And that is something that has happened periodically for most of my life. … You have the perpetrator, victim thing that happens with gun violence, but then there’s that ripple effect, and the trauma that the families experience and friends, and everything from classmates to teachers.” Bonus: Another curated book list from the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library.</image:caption>

<image:caption>“A successful leader needs to be visionary, authentic, intentional, curious, willing to adapt and accept failure and be a good listener.” -Kathleen Who is your favorite women’s history maker? “Dorothy Height was an African-American civil rights and women's rights activist. She focused on the issues of African-American women, including unemployment, illiteracy, and voter awareness. In 1967, as a national board member of YWCA, she advocated for and put into action work around fair housing. She urged women to speak to real estate boards, mortgage companies, banks, and other lending agencies to implement existing fair housing laws and worked for the passage of laws in communities where none existed. In 1990 she was one of the founders that formed the African-American Women for Reproductive Freedom.” -Kathleen Photo: Kathleen’s open door policy applies to YWCA team members of all ages!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Celebrating International Women’s Day with YWCA Leaders - What makes you feel powerful?</image:title>
<image:caption>“Collective action makes me feel powerful. The time I have felt the most empowered is when I led chants at our Annual "Week Without Violence" March & Rally last Fall. There's nothing like hearing a crowd of people proudly shout ‘this is what a feminist looks like.’” -Rachel What do you believe will helps us achieve gender equity? “Communication creates our reality. Therefore the things we say are just as important as the things we do. I believe standing against rape culture - derogatory jokes, "boys will be boys," "locker room talk" - is vital to achieve gender equity. We may tend to brush off this behavior when we encounter it so that we can keep moving forward, but we cannot allow it. When someone thinks making a sexist or transphobic joke is okay, they may think it's also okay to physically assault someone. We all have a part to play in ending gender-based violence. It starts with us!” -Rachel Photo: Rachel (front) with fellow CSE advocates at the Week Without Violence rally, October 2023.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Celebrating International Women’s Day with YWCA Leaders - What are some challenges you have faced as a leader?</image:title>
<image:caption>“Being in a leadership role for almost five decades, I've had many challenges. Misogyny in the 80s and 90s in a career path that was dominated by men meant I had to work harder and smarter. I learned that dumbing myself down so a male boss could feel less threatened was exhausting. So, I stopped doing that and just grew a tougher shell and learned to navigate not always being valued for what I brought to the workplace.” -Kathleen Photo: Kathleen at the 2023 YWCA USA Conference, accepting the Association Award for Excellence in Advocacy.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a child in the 1920s, Dorothy Height was barred from swimming in the pool at her local YWCA in Pittsburg. Even so, she began her career at YWCA Harlem in 1937, quickly rising to become one of the most influential leaders at YWCA. Height was YWCA USA's first Director of Racial Justice, and she dedicated her life to the intersectional mission of racial and gender equality. She lived to be 98 years old, leaving a trail of influence that will impact the world for generations to come. At her funeral in 2010, President Barack Obama gave the eulogy. “We have to improve life, not just for those who have the most skills and those who know how to manipulate the system. But also for and with those who often have so much to give but never get the opportunity.” – Dorothy Height</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - YWCA Black HERstory Makers - Rev. Dr. Pauli Murray coined the term “Jane Crow.”</image:title>
<image:caption>Pauli Murray was excluded from places like Columbia University, UNC Chapel Hill, and Harvard Law because of their race and gender. But none of those rejections kept Murray from devoting their life to the destruction of “Jane Crow”, as s/he called it. Murray did not shy from courageous acts of civil disobedience, such as refusing to move to the back of a bus in segregated Virginia, 1945. And their research and writings were influential to figures like Eleanor Roosevelt and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. A paper s/he wrote in law school was used by the team that successfully argued against school segregation in Brown v. Board of Education. Fun Fact: Pauli Murray will be featured on the quarter in 2024 as part of the U.S. Mint’s American Women Quarters program! Another Fun Fact: Pauli Murray was the first African American woman ordained as an Episcopal priest (1977), and was named an Episcopal saint in 2012.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - YWCA Black HERstory Makers - Blanche Parks is making Kansas HERstory today.</image:title>
<image:caption>In YWCA history, Blanche Parks was President of YWCA Northeast Kansas, and then the first Kansan to serve on the YWCA National Board of Directors. But there are many more contributions that Parks has made to our community, to Kansas, and to the YWCA movement. Parks is a Washburn alum, and was recently (2022) honored as the longest-serving member of the Washburn University Board of Regents. She brought her leadership skills to Topeka Downtown Rotary, and also served as Kansas Governor for Rotary International. And that’s just the start. She is recently retired from decades of courageously serving the State of Kansas in various roles to support Kansas families and students. We’re honored to have Blanche Parks as part of our YWCA Northeast Kansas HERstory. Read more from her 2018 interview with TK Business Magazine: “YWCA 30th Anniversary Leader: Blanche Parks.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - YWCA Black HERstory Makers - Helen Claytor was a crucial leader in establishing YWCA’s One Imperative.</image:title>
<image:caption>Another YWCA leader who started a career at her local YWCAs - including YWCA Kansas City - Helen Claytor left her mark on the movement by taking risks and empowering the organization to realize its mission from within. Her storied YWCA career included serving as National Board President (1967-1973) and placing herself at the forefront of the civil rights movement in her chosen home state of Michigan. The YWCA One Imperative: In 1946 YWCA began working for integration throughout the organization, adopting an “interracial charter” that established that “wherever there is injustice on the basis of race, whether in the community, the nation, or the world, our protest must be clear and our labor for its removal, vigorous, and steady.” That work culminated in the creation of YWCA’s One Imperative in 1970: To thrust our collective power towards the elimination of racism, wherever it exists, by any means necessary.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Research on stalking victimization in the transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) population is severely lacking. Trans and GNC people were not specified as being a part of the National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey, which reported 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience stalking at some point in their lifetimes. However, a 2020 study on trans populations and intimate partner violence reports that transgender people are 1.7 times more likely than cisgender people to experience intimate partner violence (IPV). Furthermore, intersectional research on stalking and all forms of IPV are vastly under researched. Nevertheless, a 2020 study on IPV and black women found that Black women are 44% more likely to experience IPV compared to 35% of white women.</image:caption>

We are a small organization with a very big mission. Our biggest challenge is to inspire others to join us in this movement to empower women and stand for peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.” Beyond your commitments to the YWCA, how do you like to spend your free time or engage in activities for relaxation and joy? “I love being outdoors in the woods and fields, walking and being with my dog Asta, reading, spending time and having fun with my husband, family, and friends.” Is there someone within the YWCA—whether a fellow board member, volunteer, staff member, or donor—that you look up to or find particularly inspiring? Why? “CEO Kathleen Marker is a true leader. She and her hard working team have turned our YWCA around financially and built a sterling reputation for being mission driven, accomplishing great things with limited resources, making a courageous stand for social and reproductive justice, and making a difference for women and their children as they reclaim their lives. As we work to find her successor, her legacy is a strong foundation for future success.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Beyond your commitments to the YWCA, how do you like to spend your free time or engage in activities for relaxation and joy? “Free time with my family (spouse, 3 kids), maybe a vacation in the mountains or at the beach!” Is there someone within the YWCA—whether a fellow board member, volunteer, staff member, or donor—that you look up to or find particularly inspiring? Why? “Our YWCA Executive Director, Kathleen Marker. She is an excellent leader and an outstanding member of the Topeka community, and she has accomplished so much and made such a difference at the YWCA. I need to also mention Gina Millsap (Board President) and Allison Marker (YWCA Community Engagement Director), who are also such inspiring people.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Reflecting on your work with the YWCA, what specific achievement or impact are you most proud of? “I’m pretty proud of my involvement with the YWCA planning committee, I never thought I’d enjoy fundraising and found myself loving it because of the cause and developed a new skill along the way.” What fuels your dedication to this vital work? Additionally, what do you consider the most challenging obstacle in our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women? Our mission - I feel that to my core. Being a woman of color and immigrant I experienced racism at such a young age and for most of my youth. By the time I was 18 my light was so dim, the YWCA has restored my hope and allows me to be apart of something bigger than me.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Meet Ann Barr: The 2023 Karen Viola Volunteer of the Year! - Bringing her unique skills to YWCA With her many years working in human services, Ann has the skills to interact with the clients and families we serve. She is a front desk volunteer, which means she is often the first person that people speak to on the phone or greet when they enter the building. She creates a welcoming, supportive atmosphere for staff and clients. Ann is also a long-time friend of the Center for Safety and Empowerment, getting involved with the Rotary Community Action Against Human Trafficking Club and becoming a key member of the YWCA Day Center community. She continues to support survivors and CSE staff, stepping into any volunteer role necessary. We always know we can count on Ann!</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Meet Ann Barr: The 2023 Karen Viola Volunteer of the Year! - We’re so grateful for Ann, and all our incredible volunteers who join us on our mission to eliminate racism, empower women, and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all! If you’re interested in joining Ann as a volunteer, check out the volunteer opportunities and get in touch with Alex Williams, Volunteer Coordinator, by email or at 785-233-1750.</image:title>
<image:caption>About the Karen Viola Award Karen Viola is a longtime supporter of the YWCA and gave so much of her time and energy helping with our accounting when we were in a time of need. She was with us full-time as a volunteer during a transitional period for this organization. In 2016 we honored Karen by naming our Volunteer of the Year Award the Karen Viola Award. Since then, we have recognized former front desk volunteer Vickie Deaton, former Advocacy Chair Kim Montoya, former Concealed Revealed and Resource Development volunteer Carrie Riordan, Human Trafficking volunteer advocate and veterinarian Allison Crow, front desk volunteer Kevin Williams, and volunteer and Women of Excellence Committee member Marcy Weekley. All of these distinguished volunteers serve as an inspiration to staff and supporters alike for their incredible generosity and charitable spirit and continue to model our mission within the YWCA and throughout the greater Topeka community.</image:caption>
